Antique surveying instrument from the 19th century made by Baraban-Parent: a pantometer.

Pantometers were used to measure "everything", they could be used to determine angles, distances, slopes and elevations. They consist of 2 rotating brass cylinders, a compass and a small adjustable telescope on top.

Baraban was a well-known instrument maker in Paris, mainly in the field of mathematics and surveying. He started his business in 1840, in 1875 he was succeeded by Parent and later by L.Thomas in 1892. So the age of our instrument can easily be determined between 1875-1892.

The condition of our pantometer is good. It is in a complete original unpolished state. It has gained some patina during its lifetime and there is also a crack in a lense at the ocular side. It appears to be in a working condition, but this has not been tested.

The height of the pantometer is 26 cm (measured in the center), d=the diameter of the cylinders is 8.5 cm and the weight is 2.9 kgs.
