This barometer determines the altitude by measuring differences in atmospheric pressure and converting this on the dial in height differences. It is an aneroid barometer, so it is relatively easy to use. It only needs regular calibration, which is possible by the screw at the back There is a small magnifying glass for the precision read-off. The barometer is made of black-lacquered brass. Its condition is still very good. There are only some light signs of wear visible, f.e. the paint has worn on the back and around the edges. James Henry Steward founded his business as in London in 1852. It specialized in the production of optical and scientific instruments. It was appointed as the optician to Her Majesty's British & Foreign Governments. They were in operation until 1975 and all that time they had their office at 406 Strand London.
