Antique ships dry card compass, made by L. J. Harri Amsterdam from the 19th century
L.J. Harri is a renowned supplier for the shipping industry. Leonardo Jiovanni Harri started his business in 1730 in Delft as a maker of nautical instruments. His successors moved the business to Amsterdam in 1840 and since a few years the company is located in Rotterdam. Nowadays they're not making the instruments anymore, they are only a retailer of nautical maps, instrument etc..
Our compass was made around 1850. It is a so-called gimbaled dry card compass. It has a rotating suspension ring around the compass so it could be installed in a box or casing in a way it would always remain level. There is a lead weight on bottom of the compass to keep it steady. The body of the compass is made of copper. The ring and the bezel around the glass are made of brass.
The condition of the compass is good. There are some very small dents etc. visible but no serious issues.
The diameter of the compass( without the ring) is 18,5 cm, the height is 12.5 cm and the total weight is 2.6 kgs.
