Surveying Instrument Richer à Paris 1800-1820
Antique surveying instrument from the early 19th century made by Richer à Paris.
Jean-Francois Richer (1743-1820) was a well-known French maker of scientific, mathematical and surveying instruments. Characteristic of his instruments were the high-quality crafted brass components and the use of silvered scales and walnut and mahogany. Some of his instruments found their way to musea worldwide.
The instrument which is for sale here is a surveying instrument, it consists of a small telescope, 2 levels and a large compass of which the level on top is broken. The telescope can be adjusted in height and there's a scale to read the angle. There are a lot of screws etc. present to adjust the instrument in every way possible. It is made of brass, the wood used is mahogany. The lenses of the telescope are clear. The base is not original and not antique.
The height of the instrument is around 28 cm, in normal flat position, the width is around 25 and the depth is 18 cm. The total weight is slightly above 4 kgs.
