Antique Sterling Silver Jug John Emes 1805
Large jug made by the well-know silversmith John Emes. It is probably a beer jug or pitcher, John Emes made several tankards with the same beautiful lined pattern. It is made in a rare large size. The height is 17 cm. (6.5") and the weight is 1155 grams!
The jug is marked at the top with the makers mark JE, the British silver lion, the London leopard, the year letter L of 1805 and the George III mark. On the inside of the lid it is marked JE, the lion and L.
John Emes (1772-1808) was a London silversmith, he was considered as one of the most important silversmiths of the Georgian period. Especially his silver tableware is very sought after by collectors. Unfortunately he died at a young age. After his death his work was continued by his wife, Rebecca Emes.
The jug is in a good condition, there are no damages visible and the lid closes well. It could use a good polish to let it shine as new.
